Senior Boys Soccer - Season Recap
After a huge upset last year, most of our returning
players were hungry for nothing short of a perfect season. Our
season last year wasn’t reflected in the first game against
CPHS when we only finished ahead by 1 goal that a new face had
scored. 1-0 Notre Dame. We had to start to work and want it
even more. PDCI was next on the list, at home Notre Dame where
another shut-out by our keeper helped us to our second win of
4-0. We were off to Smiths Falls where we faced another team
with a perfect record to date. Only one could prevail…
after a penalty shot gave us our 2-1 victory, we left Smiths
Falls but would see them again. Back at ND we faced Almonte,
who scored first to put our perfect season in jeopardy. But
solid coaching and captains’ leadership helped us win
with a score of 4-1. We were at the last game of the regular
season and it was not going to be easy. Our starting goalie
was injured and out of the darkness Pat Britton shone. He played
an amazing game to backstop us. St. Johns was the team that
upset us in penalty shots in the finals last year and neither
team had forgotten it. Though it was a good game, it was ended
5 minutes early after an unfortunate collision, which can only
be blamed on the weather left a St. Johns defender unable to
continue. The game ended in a 3-1 victory for Notre Dame, we
had our perfect season. Next was semi-finals where we faced
our cross-town rivals CPHS. Zach Farris, veteran striker, scored
in the first minute and last minute giving us a tight but deserved
2-1 victory. The finals was a two game home-and-home set against
SFDCI. Liam Robertson, a rookie on the senior team brought our
team to life scoring 4 goals for Notre Dame and helping us to
an 8-2 win. Special mention to Brian Zorgel and Ryan Merriman
for giving SFDCI a bit of hope in the early part of the game
with an own goal. Finally we were at home for our FINAL GAME.
We couldn’t take the previous win for granted and so we
kept practising and improving. When SFDCI arrived at Notre Dame
our team played like we needed to and played well enough to
win 2-0. Notre Dame had done it. Four years in the making, we
had our perfect season and our LCIAA trophy. Special Thanks
goes out to Ms. Lindsay Moreau our goal keeping coach, Danny
Humber our camera-man, our great fans, the support from Principal
Brady, and the Athletic Department.
