How To Conduct Post Secondary Research: University

Students will find themselves at different stages of the Research process.  If you have a good idea of which program you want to study, you may want to start here:

1.Ontario Universities Application Centre Website

-go to www.ouac.on.ca
-go to New eINFO website
-click on Degree Locator>highlight the programs you are interested in
-click on the Compare button and you will find: program pre-requisites, grade ranges,
and information regarding offers of admission

2.School Finder (universities across Canada and the U.S.)

-type in the program you are interested in, and determine which universities offer it
-consult the specific school’s website to determine the program pre-requisit requirements

Once you have a list of schools that offer your programs and you know the courses and grades required for admission, how do you decide which school is right for you? Here are some helpful tools you can use:

1. Schoolfinder (www.schoolfinder.com)

- go to the toolbar and click on School Information>School Index (on the left hand side) and then to Universities
- profiles on universties
- information on on athletics, campus life, programs virtual tours

2. Maclean’s Guide to Canadian Universities 2007 edition*

- profiles of universities
- class sizes, popular programs, student retention, scholarships…..

* Go to the Education link on the Maclean’s website. You will find information on University rankings, student rankings of their undergraduate schools…

3. Undergraduate Calendars

-read theUniversity undergraduate calendars and learn more about the courses you will be taking in university
-Find the faculty you are interested in (i.e. Engineering, Arts)
-Find the degree program you are interested in ( i.e.History)
-Take a look at the required and elective courses you will take over the next 3 or 4 years
-most calendars will provide details of individual courses at the back of the book
course descriptions are also available online
